It must be correctly identified, described, measured, and evaluated against applicable welding codes, standards, and acceptance requirements. Strong knowledge in this area supports better welding quality, reduces repeated problems, and helps protect structural integrity and service performance. The course follows a clear progression from basic understanding to professional decision-making.

It begins with the terms, locations, forms, and classifications needed to describe weld conditions correctly, then develops an understanding of common defect types and the factors that cause them. From there, it moves into prevention and process control, followed by inspection and evaluation, including interpretation, sizing, severity, code requirements, acceptance, and documentation. The final stage covers defect management, repair, post-repair verification, root-cause analysis, corrective action, and failure investigation.

In real engineering work, effective defect assessment requires more than simply finding an indication. Its type, size, location, orientation, extent, and possible effect on the welded component must be understood. The condition must also be considered in relation to the material, service conditions, inspection results, and governing requirements before deciding whether it can be accepted, requires further assessment, or needs repair.

This helps reduce unnecessary repairs, missed risks, repeated defects, and poorly supported decisions. A strong understanding of weld defect identification, prevention and control, inspection and evaluation, code-based acceptance, repair and corrective action, and failure investigation improves technical judgment throughout fabrication, inspection, maintenance, repair, and service. It also supports clearer documentation, better communication between welding and inspection teams, stronger problem solving, and more consistent decisions based on technical evidence rather than assumption.
