Stop losing half a band to grammar.Here is something many candidates do not realise until after a disappointing result: there is no grammar paper in this test. Grammar is not assessed separately — it is one of four criteria in Writing and one of four in Speaking, and in each case it accounts for a quarter of your band score for that paper. That means grammar can quietly cap your result even when your ideas, vocabulary and fluency are strong.It is also the criterion that most commonly holds candidates at 6.5 when they need 7.0. The reason is specific. Moving up requires two things at once: range, meaning you can produce a genuine variety of complex structures rather than the same three you are comfortable with, and accuracy, meaning a majority of your sentences contain no errors at all. Most candidates have one and not the other. Some write safely and accurately but simply, and score low on range. Others attempt ambitious structures and make errors throughout, and score low on accuracy. Most candidates practise by producing whole answers, which is useful for structure but almost useless for grammar — you repeat your own habits and nobody corrects them. Grammar becomes reliable through production, not recognition. Then, once a structure feels automatic, deliberately use it in a full written answer and in a spoken response, because the examiner scores what you actually produce under pressure, not what you know.A realistic expectationGrammar is one criterion of four in each of two papers. Fixing it will not turn a 5.5 into an 8.0 by itself, and any course promising that is not being straight with you.
