You need to know things like the "72-Hour Rule," HIPAA, and what counts as a "Hospital Acquired Condition. " These are free points on the exam if you know the regulations.

ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Coding: This is not just basic coding. We look at specific inpatient guidelines. We cover the tricky stuff like "Principal Diagnosis" selection, coding for Sepsis, HIV, and uncertain diagnoses.

ICD-10-PCS Procedure Coding: This is the big one. I break down the 7-character system. You will practice identifying the correct "Root Operation.

" You will learn the difference between Excision and Resection, or Release and Division. If you can get the Root Operation right, you can get the code right. Clinical Coding Scenarios: This is where we put it all together.

These are short medical stories (mini-cases). You have to read the chart and pick the right codes for both the diagnosis and the procedure. This is exactly what you will do as a real inpatient coder.
